Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization (PEARS)

Credit

This  program is approved for 8 elective CEUs for NJ EMTs.  CEU approval for New Jersey paramedics is through your MICU program's clinical coordinator.  The National Registry of EMTs accepts NJ EMT CEUs on a one-for-one basis.

Description

PEARS is a national continuing education program by the American Heart Association focusing on prevention, and specifically the assessment, recognition and stabilization of pediatric victims at risk of severe cardiopulmonary distress.  Students develop skills in recognizing certain pediatric distress signs and symptoms using several unique visual cues and working at learning stations. Because typical PEARS students do not regularly treat critically ill children, the course includes video-based simulation so they can actually see and hear critically ill children.

PEARS is well-suited for members of a pediatric resuscitation team with basic skills, whereas PALS is aimed at those with advanced skills who may lead one, even briefly.  Participants who complete the course receive an American Heart Association PEARS Provider Course Completion Card valid for two years.
