EMT Transition Program (NJ EMT Refresher Course "D")

This program is approved for 8.0 CEUs in either the Core or Elective category by the NJ Department of Health and Senior Services--Office of Emergency Medical Services .  The National Registry of EMTs accepts NJ CEUs on a one-for-one basis.   The Commonwealth of PA accepts NJ elective EMT CEUs via a special form which is also available upon request.

NJ EMTs may assign CEU earned from this course entirely to either the core or elective category, but not both.   It should be used in the same category as the 16 CEU EMT Review Program to complete the 24 CEU required in that particular category.

The EMT Transition Program is a NJ-adapted course intended to update the currently practicing NJ EMT-Basic to the new knowledge and skills of the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) described in the 2009 National EMS Education Standards published by NHTSA Office of EMS.  It presents the new skills and knowledge that some providers may have been exposed to in practice and continuing education, but not officially included in the “old” 1994 USDOT EMT-Basic National Standard Curriculum.  Successful completion of this update does not automatically initiate a new EMT card, but does permit the credentialed (authorized) practitioner to immediately operate under the revised EMT scope of practice.  It may be used by EMT-Bs who have successfully accumulated at least 16 “old” EMT-Basic Core CEUs to complete the 24 Core CEUs requirement for recertification.  This is program also satisfies the National Registry of EMTs requirement for a “a state approved EMT-Basic to Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) transition course."

It also provides eligibility to complete NJ EMT recertification via a new method of written and practical re-examination.  (Not yet released.)

This program is best suited for:
To form a complete EMT refresher program this course is intended to be taken in conjunction with the EMT Review Program to complete either the 24 CEU core or elective requirement for either the EMT-Basic or EMT.  While the two programs can be taken in any order, we recommend students taking both programs attend the EMT Review before the EMT Transition Program.

The intended audience for this program is the currently practicing EMT-Basic.  Applicants to this program must prove current CPR certification at the time of the course and have completed an approved NJ EMT Initial Training Program.
